Oscar G. to release new comprehensive three-disc artist release “DJ” (dē'jā) on Nervous Records

At a time when most dance labels are cutting costs, stripping back and going digital only, Nervous Records has their own idea of how to do business in a rough climate – offer more! That’s the rationale behind Oscar G’s whopping new three-disc effort, DJ (dē'jā'). But it’s not only offering more, it’s offering more of a good thing. Oscar’s project comes without the influence or suggestions of hit-making Nervous Records. This is 100% from the mind of Oscar G and offers a comprehensive and honest look at what’s made this artist a sensation at home in Miami and via the global dance charts.

Disc 1 features 10 brand new Oscar G original productions. Those familiar with Oscar’s chart topping work with Murk partner Ralph Falcon will be surprised by Oscar’s new direction. While tracks like “Stuck On You (featuring Stryke)” and “Your Love (Featuring Tamara Wallace)” will appeal to fans of solid vocal house, there’s also a surprise in store for those into dance’s music minimal side. “Innosence” (offered here as a free download) is a solid piece of minimal 4/4 electronic music wound tightly with all sorts of lovely bleepy things and gorgeous melodies. It’s beautiful stuff and the product of Oscar G’s recent shift from analog to digital gear.

Disc 2 offers a look into Oscar G “The DJ.” Now, this is not just another disposable DJ mix recorded “somewhere out there.” This mix was recorded live and represents Oscar G’s DJ set on the Space Miami Terrace at 7AM on @ Sunday morning – peak time. A Space resident DJ for nine years, this mix CD offers a look into what this world renowned residency is all about. The disc is programmed with tracks that can only be described as “the Miami sound.” That’s because Oscar chose tracks from many friends and fellow Miami producers including Christian Falero, Ralph Falcon, Lazaro Casanova and more. If the artist album and DJ mix doesn’t give you enough of a picture, then flip over to Disc 3 for a video documentation of an evening of music conducted by Oscar G at Space Miami.

Oscar G DJ (dē'jā') will be released August 11, 2009 on Nervous Records.

[album review] The Crystal Method - Divided by Night

The new album from The Crystal Method, Divided by Night was released on May 12, 2009 on Tiny e Records. To celebrate the new album, the duo have embarked on their first official tour as a live act in five years - you can check out the remaining US tour dates below. But first, let's hear about the album:

Couple of quick observations about the album. LOVE the artwork. Very cool concept, and I have seen a teaser video of visuals from the VJ on the tour and he does a great job of incorporating the album's visual concept into the live projections. Also, it's always great for an artist album to actually be over an hour, and this album runs about 66 minutes with 12 songs. The duo did a great job selecting guest artists for the album, including LMFAO, Peter Hook, Matisyahu, Emily Haines and Meiko. One other thing to note on the album as a whole is that they managed to sound new while also sounding like classic Crystal Method.

The album starts off with the title track 'Divided by Night'. This is a mellow, funky groover. Good for the pre-funk or the after party, but in this case, we are just getting started. Next up is 'Dirty Thirty'. The energy of the album is building. This song has a classic funky breakbeat, some acid squelches, and lots of fun synth stabs.

The third track was also the first single off the album, 'Drown in the Now' featuring Matisyahu. The video for this song is very cool and can be seen at the bottom of this article. This is a great crossover track with good music and fun lyrics. Next up is 'Kling to the Wreckage'. Lots of energy to this track, but it has a certain modern-rock vibe and a male vocal I don't care for.

'Smile?' is the next song, and this one is a great breakbeat track. Keeping the energy up and flowing. 'Sine Language' feat. LMFAO is next and is a total party joint with hilarious lyrics. This song should also appeal to a very large cross section of music fans.

'Double Down Under' is another high energy breakbeat track. It's hands-in-the-air time with this one. Really fun song that I can't wait to see performed live. 'Come Back Clean' is a nice track featuring the vocals of Emily Haines. It's a great song that I would love to hear some club remixes of.

'Slipstream' is the ninth song on the album, and it's an okay song, but it just doesn't really do anything for me. This one and 'Kling to the Wreckage' are the only two songs from the whole album that I wasn't feeling. They immediately redeem themselves with the next song, 'Black Rainbows'. 'Black Rainbows' is probably my favorite song on the whole album. We're on the downward part of the journey as far as the energy level is concerned, but this track really blew me away. It's a great song that is late night dancefloor material for packed clubs.

We conclude the album with 'Blunts & Robots' and 'Falling Hard'. 'Blunts & Robots' is a funky song that pumps the energy back up right before the end of the musical journey. 'Falling Hard' sends us off with a blissful smile with what can best be described as an electronic love song.

Overall this album gets a 9/10 from Dancefloor Mayhem. A really strong artist album from one of the biggest names to come from the American rave scene. Go buy the CD, or grab it from Itunes, and don't forget to catch them on tour if they haven't been to your city yet!

Kitsune to release Kitsuné Maison 7 compilation!

The seventh Kitsuné Maison compilation, the lucky one.

Kitsuné gets more and more professional, but stays as fresh and passionate as ever. With a constantly expanding network and always more news, discoveries, talents soon to blow-up, hopes, love, happiness and he-do-nism.

The Maison is not so much a withdrawal, but more of a welcoming space, open to all winds. There are newcomers but also loyalty, some artists are now firmly part of, not just the maison, but the Kitsuné family. Lately the bands from the Kitsuné Maison compilations have also started to play some collective shows together: Kitsuné En Vrai! (Kitsuné For Real!).

The Kitsuné sieve keeps on searching for gold and inevitably some mornings the discoveries put you in a good mood. So here’s already the seventh compilation, the one that strikes lucky.

Kitsuné Maison 7 will be released June 9, 2009 on Kitsune. Pick it up on iTunes, Amazon, Beatport, eMusic, and other fine digital outlets.

Enjoy a free song from the compilation:

Kitsune on MySpace

Kitsuné Maison 7 Tracklisting:

1) TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB - Something Good Can Work
They’re very young, very shy, very three, very Northern Irish. They’re into melody, very much so. We believe in them. Close your eyes and here you are: somewhere else. The most beautiful song there is.

2) WE HAVE BAND - Time After Time
They’re young too, also three, although there’s a couple in the trio. A mental energy on stage that’s left the Parisian audience of a Kitsuné En Vrai gig totally battered. Proper heroes.

3) PHOENIX - Lisztomania (CLASSIXX Version)
Here’s the first single of the long awaited new Phoenix album, remixed by the new Los Angeles scene: Classixx. A production that’s evocative of a Corvette in the sun, carefree, before it all gets dangerously heated up. Quite convenient too when you’re fifteen (at least spiritually) to French kiss for a whole five minutes.

4) CRYSTAL FIGHTERS - Xtatic Truth
They say: “We make dance music with Basque instruments, synths and our voices”. In London people talk of Folktronica. At Kitsuné’s headquarter in Montmartre, we find that it opens the door quite a bit and let fresh air comes in.

5) THE GOLDEN FILTER - Favourite Things
The italo-disco scene revitalized by these New Yorkers who have been close to Kitsuné for a long time. The girl goes through her list of favorite things and that’s enough for us: “coffee, sugar, ice cream, vintage dresses, kittens, rabbits, Paris, nice girls, cute boys”. Feels familiar.

6) LA ROUX - In For The Kill (LIFELIKE Remix)
Here La Roux is remixed by Lifelike, mr glamour from Strasbourg. These days she’s one of the most fashionable artists in the Kitsuné Maison. The track is as smooth as a yellow Testarossa that won’t stop, just like Donna Summer’s endless orgasms. The beat revolves around broken glass, yes we drink Russian-style at Kitsuné.

7) BENI - Fringe Element (Short Like Me Edit)
Young, charismatic producer, he makes club music. He’s part of the good, ebullient Aussie scene. The track takes an unexpected turn, in discotheque slang it’s called ‘major sweating’.

8) AutoKratz - Always More (Yuksek Remix)
The band of the moment remixed by the remixer of the moment, a healthy Manchester/Paris connectivity. The break is sublime: ‘take my hand, you can break my heart’ sung through a vocoder. We don’t aim to be too lyrical but… In June 2009 Kitsuné releases Autokratz’s album.

9) 80 KIDZ - Miss Mars
A Tokyo trio that’s crept up on the electro radar these last few months. They’re extremely polite, take great care of the way they dress; they’re Japanese and we believe the best of their scene right now.

10) JAMES YUILL - This Sweet Love (Prins Thomas Sneaky Edit)
Atmospheric and acoustic, check the contrast between the simplicity of the voice and the richness of the Prins Thomas remix. Extremely beautiful song, another vision of the sun. Because we’re talking of a maison and not a barn, Kitsuné likes to relax but not let go totally.

11) MEN - Make It Reverse
There had to be an act who would call itself Men. The lesbian scene moves in la Maison. A very militant sound, alternative sexuality, new hormones for a new life. They have as much energy as ‘radicality’, it quickly entices you to jump up and down. Very good very loud at four in the morning to do what you do at four in the morning.

12) CHEW LIPS - Solo
The sound of east London now today, not just another guitar band. Music that experiments and improvises among four tons of influences. The city’s urgency, the impatience, the vitality, the whirling.

13) CHATEAU MARMONT - Beagle
The thirteen track on the seventh Maison. Here are some French people impressed by the luxurious Californian hotel where fashionable actors come to die. They’re childhood friends, into science fiction, and down the end a sound quite hard to grasp.

14) HEARTSREVOLUTION - 薔薇と彼女の王子
The band behind the craziest track of Maison 6 makes a welcome return. Their album will come out in September 2009 and love will rain. They’re handsome, they have a Swarovski microphone, plenty of ideas, they’ll go a long way. True idols.

15) DELPHIC - Counterpoint (Delphic’s En Route Mix)
Delphic is a British band from Manchester, Kitsuné will release their album in September 2009. Influences range from Orbital to Underworld, very much what we like. To listen at sunset, sunrise and in between.

16) ENCORE –
An empty index, the moment people scream for an encore at a concert.

17) MAYBB - Touring In NY (Short Tour Edit)
Here hides a very, very famous guy who doesn’t wish to be named. So we can’t give away much, it’ll drive you crazy, but really we can’t tell you more.

18) RENAISSANCE MAN – Rythym
They’re Finnish from Helsinki, used to be students with Abäke, Kitsuné’s graphic designers. Yes there is nepotism too at Kitsuné. The result could be used as soundtrack for contemporary ballet, it sure cleans the aural pipes.

19) TANLINES – Bejan
Tribal and epic music from New York. Their own press release sums it up perfectly: “Balearic and disco Larry Levan-style with an insistent euphoric charm that’s perfect to blow up the soft-skinned British students.”

I found this fun little 16 x 16 sound generator called Tone Matrix. Very fun to play around with, and you could actually use it in audio production if you use audio out from your computer to your recording source. It was very addictive to me at first, as is any good music-based web app. Enjoy!

Fuse Releases HUGE 3xCD set to celebrate their 15th Anniversary!

This is without any doubt THE ultimate techno classics compilation.

Fuse is the premier techno club of Belgium and has been so since its opening on April 16th 1994. It started off as a haven for high quality techno with a reputation for bringing in the best and most innovative DJs on the scene. Alongside residents Pierre and Deg, DJs such as Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Dave Clarke, Sven Vaeth, Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos and lots of others seem to enjoy playing here as much as the crowd enjoys partying to their sets. These innovators of electronic music constantly come back for more and rate Fuse as one of their favorite clubs. You will have to venture to 208 Rue Blaesstraat in Brussels to experience the cutting-edge, exciting vibe, an atmosphere fuelled by die-hard party seekers, ready to dance well into the next day.

2009 means the celebration of their 15th anniversary, and of course such a celebration is impossible without the release of a compilation. A triple-CD, including full length versions of tracks by E-Dancer, Octave One, Adam Beyer, Audion, Anthony Rother, Plastikman, Ricardo Villalobos, Robert Hood, M83 and many many more.

Of course it’s never going to be easy compiling tracks that have to reflect a 15 year history. Everyone has his or her own 15 years of history, and that means favorite tracks of his or her own. Thousands of tracks have passed since April 16th 1994 – the opening of Fuse club – and who can rightly tell which one is best? So here is what in perspective is a minuscule fraction of what can be considered as ‘hits’ or ‘classics’. We know there’s much more out there. Bigger hits. Tracks that are more underground. Tracks that made you lose yourself. Tracks that blew your mind. Tracks that changed the way you listen to music. This isn’t a statement. Just a compilation of good tracks that a lot of people will enjoy listening to.

Red Dress Party 2009 Recap!

So I had the pleasure of DJing at the 9th Annual Red Dress Party last night, which was held at a very cool brick warehouse space in NW Portland (the Bodyvox studio at NW 17th and Northrup). The Red Dress Party is an annual event in Portland that raises money for local AIDS charities and is one of the best parties in Portland each year.

This year's theme was 'Red Eye' and the entire venue was decked out for the theme. There were spinning baggage claim carousels, booths that looked like they were in a plane, flight attendants serving food to VIPs and more! You have to wear a Red Dress to be at the party, and everyone was decked out as usual. Some amazing outfits last night!

I wanted to thank everyone for making the event a huge success, it is obvious how much time and effort goes into an event of this scale, and everyone there was having a blast. I also want to thank the Red Dress Party Board for allowing me to be a part of it this year - hope to DJ there next year also.

The party goers had such great energy in my room all night, thank you everyone for dancing and enjoying the music!

Below are some of my pictures from last night and a couple of short video clips. If you didn't make it this year - plan on going next year. The party is one not to miss!
