Hidden Recordings

Deepak Sharma and his Hidden Recordings label are blowing up quickly. The New York City native has the techno flowing in buckets and the press has taken notice. Previously featured in Big Shot, Mixmag and Time Out NY; Sharma and Hidden Recordings are the subject of a feature in the current issue of DJ Times Magazine. The feature dabbles into Sharma’s production and DJ techniques, his inspiration and tips for aspiring DJs and producers, and a piece on how to launch and run a successful label in 2009.

The label has shared a couple of tracks with us. Hope you enjoy the music, and follow the link below the free tracks to purchase additional music from the Hidden Recordings catalog at Beatport.

Moby - Shot in the Back of the Head

I have always been a big Moby fan since his early days on Instinct Records when he also recorded under the moniker of Voodoo Child. A gifted producer and a rare crossover in the American techno scene who is now a pop star in his own right. Mute just announced that Moby's next album, Wait For Me, will be released on June 30th. To tide us over, they have given us this mellow, brooding track 'Shot in the Back of the Head' along with the video, which was directed by David Lynch, of Twin Peaks fame.

Dengue Fever - Sleepwalking Through the Mekong CD/DVD Released Today!

Dengue Fever‘s documentary film Sleepwalking Through The Mekong, was released today! The package features a DVD and a CD soundtrack. The film chronicles the journey taken by Los Angeles-based Khmer rock band Dengue Fever to lead singer Chhom Nimol’s native Cambodia during the Water Festival. The band’s performance marked the first time a Western band has ever performed ‘60s Cambodian rock in the country where it was created. Most of the musicians who originally created the music were killed during the Pol Pot regime. The film serves up a portrait of modern Cambodia as the band tours through Phnom Penh and beyond, crossing a great cultural chasm with the same spirit of Cambodia’s original rock pioneers.

Sleepwalking Through The Mekong was directed by John Pirozzi, who was a cinematographer on Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man and Johnny Ramone: Too Tough To Die. DVD bonus material include a biography of the band Dengue Fever, live performance segments, comments from director John Pirozzi, segments on the Cambodian Water Festival, the traditional Cambodian Coconut Dance and Cambodia’s Master Musicians.

The accompanying CD soundtrack includes classic tracks from Cambodian artists Ros Serey Sothea, Sinn Sisamouth and Meas Samoun, as well as original material created by Cambodian master musicians Tep Mary and Kong Nai with Dengue Fever, and 2 previously unreleased Dengue Fever tracks.

Watch the trailer for the movie::

Sleepwalking Through the Mekong Review

I received an advanced copy of the CD/DVD package to review and must say I really enjoyed both the film and the soundtrack. This project doesn't fit into our typical electronic / dance music realm, but they are a unique band with a fun sound, and I was moved by their journey to Cambodia and wanted to encourage Dancefloor Mayhem readers to see the film and listen to the soundtrack.

The film is very vibrant and colorful, and does an excellent job of portraying the people of Cambodia in their daily lives. One thing that really stood out to me was that it seemed like everyone was always smiling. This country of Cambodia was devastated by the aftermath of the Vietnam War, and the people are working to not lose any of the musical culture in song and dance that was so vibrant before the war.

We follow the band as they interact with master musicians as well as a new generation of singers, dancers and musicians. The group is very humble and gracious and receive a warm welcome wherever they go. The film puts you in the middle of the action as they travel to different places in Cambodia and perform their music. I also appreciated the historical context that was explained throughout the movie. At one point a music teacher is moved to tears as she explains how wonderful it was to have had the group play native Cambodian music with her students in her class.

The soundtrack is great on its' own, but somehow sounded even better after watching the film. The film helps to put the various songs into context and is a nice mix of original Dengue Fever music combined with some Cambodian classics. It is really fun to hear the music from the Cambodian musicians of the 60s and 70s and their take on psych rock. You can only imagine the kind of music scene that might exist today had they not been derailed by the cultural annihilation suffered at the hands of the Pol Pot regime.

Lil Roj began experimenting with mixing electronic music in Southern Louisiana at the young age of 15. In 1994, at the age of 18 he broke into the nightclub scene and two years later, the New Orleans Rave scene. He was soon recognized as a rising local talent due to his well received progressive, broken, techno sets.

Early gigs included Freebass Society events at the State Palace Theatre, known as the epicenter of music, drama, and culture in the New Orleans dance music scene, as well as various mid 90’s warehouse parties throughout the region. In the years to follow Roj continued to play at events in his home state as well as at many major shows throughout the Southern US in cities such as Houston, Memphis, and along the Mississippi gulf coast.

In 2002 Roj transplanted to Portland Oregon where he has once again established himself as a top local talent. These days Roj can be found performing at warehouse parties throughout the region as well as rockin’ events at Portland’s hottest clubs.

His current sound is best described as solid-dirty-techy-funk, which can take the form of tech-house as well as breakbeats. He has also begun to make his entry in to the world of original production and is currently working on a number of soon to be released remixes and original tunes.

Dada Life - Happy Hands & Happy Feet

Here’s a little something you should know about. It’s underground sensation Dada Life and their just-released “Happy Hands & Happy Feet” EP. The boys are dropping this bomb in advance of their debut artist album Just Do The Dada (set for release later this spring / summer) and decided to offer you a download of the title track for free.

The brainchild of Stockholm-based Olle Corneer and Stefan Engblom, Dada Life doesn’t care about genres. They don’t care about smartness. They don’t care about the things you care about. Dada Life just wants to make you jump up and down. Then make you crash into a wall with a smile on your face. That’s exactly what’s gonna happen upon listening to the “Happy Hands & Happy Feet” EP. The original’s got a totally unique sound with a dirty 4/4 beat, bleepy effects and some truly warped vocals. On the remix front, Dada Life secured the talents of Malente, Alex Gopher, Moonbotica and Phatzoo for some twisted alternate versions of the track.

Inspired by John Cage, Early Acid House, Trance, 60s Psychedelia and Little Richard, among other things, Dada Life has emerged with a unique sound that’s modeled from a broad canvas of musical stimulation. When performing as a live act Dada Life is one box of bananas, a couple of bottles of Champagne and a lot of sweat and broken equipment. On the other hand, Dada Life DJ-gigs tend to go the same way with an MPC and some controllers that enable the boys to play around with samples and loops even when they DJ. They also constantly produce their own remixes/edits of good tunes in order to have something unique to play during the sets. North American audiences will experience this firsthand when Dada Life takes to the States for a full tour later in 2009!

“Happy Hands & Happy Feet” is out now. Be on the lookout for Dada Life’s debut artist CD Just Do The Dada this spring/early summer.
