Upcoming Cut Copy tour dates!

{Cut Copy}

Direct from the group:

Just a quick note to say how excited we are to be jumping onto a plane to Mexico today to start our final tour on "In Ghost Colours." Our last North American trip was amazing, and there's no reason to expect this one won't be even more insane, bringing the party to the next level. We've got a new song or two to unleash, and perhaps some crate digging into our catalog as well. In addition our eccentric French Canadian lighting genius has put together a great new show, Matt and Kim will be bringing their manic live intensity to the stage before us, and longtime Cutters brother-in-arms Knightlife will be dispensing disco pleasure in between sets.

All the dates are listed below. Many thanks to the people of San Francisco, Denver, St Louis, Chicago, New York, and D.C. for parting with their hard-earned cash early and selling out these shows before we leave. The rest of the shows still have some tickets available.

In addition to the live show, Cutters Records (a label owned by the band) will be throwing a few parties to celebrate the re-launch of the label in 2009. Cut Copy DJs and Knightlife will be spinning at all the parties (as will the lovely and talented Daisy O'Dell) except SF, where Cut Copy DJs fly solo for longtime supporter Aaron Axelson's Popscene Party. These should be energetic, slightly messy affairs, and we hope you join us.

OMG! Music Xplosion!

Lots of great stuff in this post, including 6 free songs, a video interview with Elite Force and some upcoming parties in Portland. Be sure to read the entire post!

{La Roux}

This track is seeing a lot of blog action, as well as the original version and a remix by The Twelves. An amazing voice, nice dubby spaced out sounds on this one, then it busts out into a drum-n-bass beat over the last minute of the song. Really love this one!

{DJ Red}

We have previously featured a track from DJ Red and Josh Dupont. Josh Dupont did a remix of this song, but we were really feeling this original version. A nice uptempo house track, again in the same vein as the stuff that you would hear played by DJs like DJ Dan and Donald Glaude. It's a club banger with that funky house flavor. Play this one loud!

{The BPA}

The BPA or Brighton Port Authority, are a band from the UK signed to Fatboy Slim's Southern Fried Records label. Their debut album is available now, and features guest artists such as Ashley Beedle, Iggy Pop (featured on the original version of 'He's Frank'), David Byrne, Dizzee Rascal, Justin Robertson, Pete York and more.

I didn't care so much for the vocals on this track (no offense Iggy!), so was happy to get a dub remix courtesy of Skylark. This is a great instrumental track, emphasis on mental! It gets all tripped out starting around the 5 minute mark, gives you a second to catch your breath, then bangs back in at the 6 minute mark. A really subtle percussive undercurrent complements the bassline perfectly.

{Division Kent}

We have previously featured music from both Division Kent and Melnyk before, so it was only natural to post a track that combines their musical talents. This is a hauntingly beautiful synth-fueled electro-pop tune.

{Elite Force}

Elite Force has been relentless in pushing his unique sound of tech-funk and this track is a perfect example of that sound. It's got a pulsating 4/4 bassline, but borrows elements from his experience producing breakbeats. This track will definitely get people moving on the dancefloor!

Watch Bianca Dino aka The Beat Seeker interview Elite Force at last year's LoveFest in San Francisco:

This is a great job of a blend / mashup by DJ Medley. Taking two great tracks and retaining the good elements of both tracks and fusing them into a new song. That is what makes a great mashup / blend, and DJ Medley has got it down. Everyone should love this one!

[music video] DJ Rolando - Knights Of The Jaguar

Here is the video for arguably one of the best techno tracks ever composed:

DJ Rolando - Knights of the Jaguar

[music video] Robyn - Cobrastyle

Just found the high quality version of Robyn's video for her song 'Cobrastyle'. This is a very colorful video, very fun, and the backing music is poppy-electro but at a drum-n-bass tempo. I think you'll like it!

Already remixed by the likes of Crookers and Jokers of the Scene, 'Day 'n' Nite' by Kid Cudi now gets the remix treatment from our friend Minus. In addition to being a talented producer, Minus also has some graphic design and graf skills.

Nina Simone, Nadia Ali and Cicada oh my!

{Nadia Ali}

This first article is about someone who I hope needs no introduction. The voice behind the now famous song 'Rapture' and other smash club hits (from iiO). The girl who pens the lyrics to all of her own songs...Miss Nadia Ali!

On February 10th, Nadia Ali released her latest hot dance single, 'Love Story' on Beatport. The single will be released to Itunes on March 9th. With original production by Sultan & Ned Shepard, the release will include remixes from Starkillers, Sultan & Ned Shepard and Andy Moor, and will be supported by a new music video. Further remixes from The Scumfrog and others will follow. Just days after being premiered, Love Story was the number one breakout on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Chart, was featured on a number of the world's top mix shows, including Armin Van Buuren's "A State Of Trance," and was record of the week on Above & Beyond's "Trance Around The World."

The official release party for Love Story, including a full live performance by Nadia Ali, will be at 8PM on March 7, 2009 at Hiro Ballroom in NYC. For details and discounted advance tickets, please go to: http://newyork.going.com/nadiaali.

We have previously featured the talented duo's remixes of Ladyhawke, Claude VonStroke and Pink Floyd. Now enjoy their wonderful take on Nina Simone. This is a great deep house bootleg, reminds of some classic Deep Dish production work. Very well done!

So many good remixes of 'Circus' - here is another one. This remix is from Robin Da Hood. This remix is seriously banging with a little more of an electro house feel. Very high energy. The lyrics are chopped up more than in other versions, and it has a nice thick bassline.

DJ Hell - The Angst

International Deejay Gigolo founder DJ HELL to release 'The Angst' & 'The Angst Pt. 2' - the lead single from his much anticipated new artist album Teufelswerk.

Listen to 'The Angst' & 'The Angst Pt. 2' the lead single from DJ Hell’s forthcoming album Teufelswerk, and you’ll appreciate the direction Hell is taking. Here’s a teaser: Teufelswerk – the German for “Devil’s Work” – is Hell’s masterpiece. Across 16 exquisite tracks divided into two themes, “Night” and “Day”, Hell weaves an intoxicating spell. Celestial vocals cascade around an acoustic guitar figure as a motorik rhythm propels it ever skywards, sharing space, spiritually at least, with Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk and Can.

Hell, with his old friend Peter Kruder produced the "Day" half assisted by noted multi-instrumentalists Christian Prommer and Roberto Di Gioia. The “Night” album is raw mix of Chicago and Detroit influences combined with Hell’s swashbuckling approach to electronics, this portion is for the dance floor.

For this single release Hell invited Henrik Schwarz to bring a touch of the night to “The Angst Pt. 1 and Pt. 2.” As a stand-alone piece of music it’s as solid as the dance floors it will be played on, but immediately hints at the wealth of ideas that exist on this forthcoming album. Teufelswerk is a lush, narcotic odyssey, the album sounds unlike anything he’s produced in the past. “The album is very personal,” Hell says. “All my knowledge is there…I don’t think I can make a better record.”

The single will be in stores and available for purchase online on February 23rd. Please enjoy the video for 'The Angst Part 1' below. After the video you can stream 'The Angst Part 1' and download it for free. If you visit DJ Hell on MySpace, you can preview full-length versions of each of the three songs on the single.

Meat Katie

{Mark Pember aka Meat Katie}

Meat Katie has long been a favorite producer of mine, and he has been making dope breakbeat and tech influenced tracks for almost 15 years. Working closely with Dylan Rhymes, they often produce tracks together and remix each others songs, and also run the hugely popular Lot 49 record label together.

Meat Katie is also working with Simon Shackleton aka Shack from Elite Force on a new project as Dustbowl.

I wanted to share some music with you that Meat Katie has posted on the music site Sound Cloud. First up is a track he co-produced with Dopamine called 'Nectahh'.

[stream the song by clicking the play button]

This next streaming audio file is actually a soon-to-be released mix CD he did for the Chinese super-club Baby Face. It is comprised exclusively of tracks from the Lot49 label. Here is the tracklisting:

An exclusive interview with FreQ Nasty!

We had the chance to do an interview with FreQ Nasty via e-mail and jumped on the chance. Below is the interview, followed up with some info about him and some music!

[DM = Dancefloor Mayhem / FN = FreQ Nasty]

DM: What is the first record you remember buying?

FN: I think it was an Australian bands' record called 'When the War Is Over', but it was on a Now That’s What I Call Music compilation. Not very cool, but a great tune still in an Aussie pub rock ballad kinda way… if that isn’t a contradiction in terms.

DM: You mentioned listening to The Beatles and a lot of Blues music as a kid. What other genres of music did you listen to growing up?

FN: My dad had some old Jazz records like Les Paul and Mary Ford, and some Fijian records too… kinda like Hawaiian. I've yet to incorporate that early influence.

DM: What artists have influenced you in your music production?

FN: My influences are always changing according to what I am listening too. There are always the greats that I come back to time and time again. Funkadelic, Billy Boyo and the Greensleeves catalogue, Public Enemy. I’m really feeling Clipse right now (DnB artist), Rezo, and Propa Tingz.

DM: If you could work with any artist to make a record, who would it be, and why?

FN: Tom Waites! His records and his voice are so extreme sonically, and he’s always pushing the boundaries. Never stuck in a rut, and you never know what to expect. He’s the ultimate.

DM: In your bio, you mention that your motivation to buying your first guitar was to avoid working shit jobs when you grew up. If you hadn't become a musician, what do you think you would be doing for work right now?

FN: Probably a chef. I love making good food for people. It's kind of like being a DJ - finding great fusions and blending them in a way that makes sense. A culinary DJ. A Food jockey?

DM: Could you name a couple of cities you have played that have had very receptive audiences and really embraced the sound that you play?

FN: Tbilisi in Georgia (ex Russian state), Australia is always phenomenal, Black Rock City too.

DM: If given the choice, would you rather play at a massive event with tens of thousands of people, or a more intimate venue with just a few hundred people?

FN: Small venue, low ceiling, big system turned only half way up, stage right in front of the crowd and lots of bass!!

DM: If you were asked to name your selections for the five best songs of all time, regardless of genre, what would they be and why?

FN:

1. Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On

It's hard to understand the impact of a record like this when it came out. The sound was totally different, it was long, experimental, political and conscious, and he sung like an angel. Sounds kinda schmaltzy these days I guess but I can only imagine how it changed peoples worlds back then.

2. Public Enemy - She Watches Channel Zero

Again a record that changed everything (It takes a nation of millions…) in subject matter, production and presentation. After the bragging macho rapping of early hip-hop, PE upped the anti and opened up hip-hop to be a revolutionary force, adding metal to the mix to give white kids a way in to the party. Genius. Off an album still regularly rated the best hip-hop album ever and in the top 50 of any decent music mags top 50 of all time. Classic for too many reasons.

3. James Brown - I’m Black and I’m Proud – or just about anything from late 60’s to early seventies.

Arguably where most of Public Enemy's inspiration came from. The sound is insane - percussive, bass driven, with minimal melody and a guys grunting his way through a radical manifesto for world change. Half of the blueprint for all forms of dance music as we know it are here.

4. Lee Scratch Perry - Blackboard Jungle Dub

The other half of the DNA of dance music. Instrumental using dub effects and bass heavy. Came from no where and proceeded to change the way we listen to music.

5. Funkadelic

If Hendrix had lived and joined James Browns' band they would have sounded like this. And the message was a haze of psychedelic wisdom from brothers who weren’t afraid to wear spandex and arrive on stage climbing out of a space ship. KISS had nothing on these guys.

DM: I read about the work you are doing with GiveBack.net and I think that is awesome.

If you had the opportunity to appear before the UN and tell them one global issue that they should really focus on, what issue would that be and why?

FN: Wow that’s a hard question. I’m going to side step a little and say that the point of Giveback is to create a forum for the exchange of ideas and taking action so we don’t have to rely on institutions to do our work for us. Ultimately we want to be able to help people see something on the news that moves them and do something about it regardless of whether their government, or the UN or anyone else does. Its going to take some doing but the internet is grass roots first and Obama has taken advantage of that very cleverly, and the more we see examples of others doing it the more we will start to act of our own volition rather than waiting for others like the UN to act for us.

[end of interview]

I want to take a quick moment to thank FreQ Nasty for the interview, and also thank Justin Kleinfeld for his help in coordinating it.

The second portion of this post is taken from a prior posting, but we wanted to include the music and background info with the interview for those of you that missed it.

FreQ Nasty has been making explosive bass-laden broken beats for years, and is always pushing the boundaries of dance music. He recently mixed Fabric Live 42 and has been busy working with a slew of artists to churn out some amazing new material. This latest track he produced with Propa Tingz and it is a high energy dubstep bomb.
