Music to get your week started

Time feels like it has been flying by this month. As we enter the last few days in July, I want to thank all the readers that come by on a regular basis and/or subscribe in a reader. That is the best way to stay current on all the music we post up as well as events we think you should check out, new music artists you may not have heard of, album reviews, label profiles and more!

First some more good news!!! After a slight delay and a change in schedule, the Dancefloor Mayhem internet show launches today on Techno.FM!

The show will air every Sunday night 6pm - 8pm PST / 9pm - 11pm EST. Tune in for music we have featured on the site, guest DJ mixes and other fresh music. The format is fairly open, we will usually start out with some downtempo stuff, then move on into electro, electro house, house, tech house, techno and other genres. This week our featured guest mix is from Alex Tomb of Elektrotribe Records.

You can also download and/or stream his mix below:

Alex Tomb - Summer Mix 2008

Here is how Alex Tomb describes his thought process both in the studio and recording DJ sets:

“I love techno music so that’s what I’m creating. My passion is mainly bass lines, surrounded by dark minimal melodies and percussion, trying to reach as dark as possible. Breakdowns are my obsession. When spooky atmospheres and mysterious melodies begin to sink through to your subconscious, hypnotizing, for as long as you can take it.
As a Dj I like to lead listeners through a trip, layering bass line over bass line into an abyss of obscurity. The style of music I'm playing and producing can be described as mainly techno with a minimal approach on elements. It is heavily dark and hypnotic without knowing what to expect.“

Next up we have a remix from Touch of a track by Hornbeam titled 'Dance or Drive'.

Hornbeam - Dance or Drive (Touch remix)

This video caught my eye...

Little Boots - Ready for the Fun (cover of 'Ready for the Floor' by Hot Chip!)

The music is produced using the new Yamaha Tenori-on - a 16x16 matrix of LED switches that allows everyone to play music intuitively, creating a "visible music" interface. It is very cool to watch::

Let's Get Shook

Shook is a dance music producer from The Netherlands. You can hear the impact some his major influences have had on his work, which I think is a great thing. This sound is not an "imitation" sound, but something of his own combination of elements in the mix. It spans musical genres and musical decades. It is both old and new thus making it Fresh. And relevant.

Enjoy the music.

1986 - This track is an awesome track that hearkens back to 'Back to the Future', breakdancing, ghetto blasters / boom boxes, and electro / bass! You can hear a definite Daft Punk / Justice / Kavinsky modernness to it, while at the same time being a little stripped back compared to those songs, in a good way. This is 1980s electro in an earlier form. People will have fun on the dancefloor.

Shook - 1986

The Glow - What is that noise? In the distance...a storm is coming...for whom the bell tolls...what's that i hear? Did the song just explode in the air around us?! Now I am dancing in a frenzy and pumping my fist in the air.

Shook - The Glow

Beast - Nothing beastly about this track...unless you can't dance to a sultry electro beat that blends disco, electro and funk into a hot, sticky mess...than slaps us on the ass with his synthesizer. Or was That his Beast?!

Shook - Beast

Here comes more Mayhem!!!

Getting lots of great stuff in my inbox lately. Increased traffic to the site. Due in part to the great big Hype Machine!

I'd like to thank everybody for stopping by, and remind you that if you like what you hear, subscribe in a reader to stay current with what we post, click on some buttons to fave and vote for us at some of the places we are listed, and of course, if you can, make a small donation or check out some of our great sponsors. We host a lot of the music that we list on the site, and need to move to a new home soon with more storage so we can keep giving you fresh beats.

Just a little more news about the site...Dancefloor Mayhem is going to start this Sunday, July 27th as an internet show on Techno.FM. That's right! For 2 hours every Sunday, from 6pm - 8pm PST (9pm - 11pm EST), you will hear Tronic in the mix. We are going to have themed shows in addition to featuring guest DJ mixes and music featured right here on the site.

Now, onto the music!!!

First up we are going to have Ill Cosby aka ill83 with his remake of the club / speed garage classic 'Spin, Spin Sugar' by The Sneaker Pimps (Armand Van Helden's Dark Garage remix). The Ill One was featured previously on Dancefloor Mayhem here.

The remix is in the Bmore vein and will certainly get people moving.

ill83 - Sugar

Next up, we've got a fun remix of 'Low' by Flo-Rida feat. T-Pain. You're probably thinking there have already been too many remixes of this track, but this one is fresh, I swear! A little on the mellow side compared to some of the electro house bangers I've heard, but I really like this one. Remixed by Headburn. Another one that will get them shakin' it if it ain't been shook yet.

Flo-Rida feat. T-Pain - Low (Headburn remix)

Next up we've got Mephisto Odyssey remixed by Hot Pink Delorean - a trio of electro producers that make big tunes. Here they kick up the energy on this new track from Mephisto Odyssey.

Before I share some info about this track and upcoming release...let me just say I was FREAKIN' stoked to hear the news. New music from one of my most favorite producers / DJs of all time...a big influence on my DJ-ing.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the future! After a six-year hiatus from releasing compilations, DANNY TENAGLIA is back with double-CD set FUTURISM (Tommy Boy). Single “The Space Dance,” the first new original music from Tenaglia since 2004, was inspired by his sets at Space, the Ibiza superclub where he is holding down a weekly Thursday residency – his first ever on the island – throughout the summer.

The adventurous, addictive FUTURISM captures the sounds that the beloved DJ/producer is playing right now. Featuring minimal tech grooves like “Filthy Phunk” (Shinedoe), “Rolling Brooklyn” (Luca Bacchetti), and “I Ment To Be Sharp” (Davide Squillace), the set is unmistakably of-the-moment. But unexpected explosions like “Tiir” (DJ Mosoga); haunting, disembodied vocals; and Tenaglia’s own secret samples bring the mix to deeper levels. It’s techy, it’s tribal, it’s twisted, yet somehow timeless: It’s unmistakably Danny.

“If you think of the word ‘techno,’ it’s just short for technology,” says Tenaglia. “What was Kraftwerk doing? What was Larry Levan doing up in the booth, with reel-to-reel and reverb? They were being experimental.”

At the time of his last compilation, “Back To Basics” (2002), Tenaglia was a resident at New York venue Vinyl/Arc. His weekly Be Yourself party was one of the city’s last havens for music lovers. When the club closed in April 2004, Tenaglia took to the road, and became one of the most successful touring DJs in the world. To date, he has traveled to over 28 countries, playing for crowds from 200 to 200,000.

A slate of tour dates supporting FUTURISM will carry Tenaglia from coast to coast and ocean to ocean over the upcoming year, but the summer belongs to Ibiza. Tenaglia will hold down a weekly Thursday residency kicking off July 3rd at legendary White Isle venue Space.

Finally, we'll wrap up with a combination hip-hop / dubstep track from Henok Achido. Henok has gotta be the dopest MC in Sweden, because he could give most MCs in America a run for their money. The beats are crazy dope and the flow is right up there with people like Spank Rock.

Next up is some Psy Trance from Aya. I love psy trance, but for those of us not in that specific 'scene' it can sometimes be hard to find good psy trance music. For those unfamiliar with the term Psy Trance, the psy is short for psychedelic. It is a very fast tempo-ed genre and is very similar to goa trance. Tracks tend to be epic in length (one of Aya's songs clocks in at over 18 minutes) and take you on a journey.

Psy Trance is a very popular genre around the world, and some of the genre's biggest names hail from Israel. As with most forms of electronic / dance music, psy trance has it's drugs of choice. Obviously with a name like psychedelic, those drugs tend to be magic mushrooms and LSD (acid). Popular psy trance producers include Infected Mushroom and Sphongle, and perhaps the most popular psy / goa trance DJ is Goa Gil.

The Shamen were also influential on the music and the psy trance 'scene', in particular, the work they did with cult hero Terrance McKenna.

Aya has shared 4 songs with us and I hope you enjoy them.

Aya - Aya

Aya - Galicia

Aya - Smash the DJ (2008 remix)

Aya vs Nystagmus - Smash the DJ (2008 remix)

Aya is also a member of Organix Productions.

As a bonus, I want you to check out this song from The Shamen and Terrance McKenna - one of my favorite tripped out tracks of all time:

The Shamen - Re-Evolution (feat. Terrance McKenna)

I know this is a long post, but I had a lot I needed to share, and didn't get a post up yesterday, so lots of goodies for you to listen to!

The last thing I want to share with you on the subject of trance and psy trance is a mix from a good friend and fellow Portland DJ - Blue Submarine. Blue Submarine is a Japanese native now living in Portland. He brings a lot of energy to his mixes whether it is psy trance, tribal house, or electro house. He is a versatile DJ with a great music selection. He did a special mix just for the Dancefloor Mayhem readers, so I hope you enjoy.

Blue Submarine - Sleepwalker :: The style of this mix was described as progressive psy trance. It's got a great track selection and lots of energy.

Here is the tracklisting for Sleepwalker:

01: Glacifier2 - ViceFlow
02: Cloud Politics - Flowjob
03: Catching Me - Fusi & Day
04: All Season - Frogacult
05: Drums of Africa - Tegma
06: Moving On - ViceFlow
07: Optomatic - ViceFlow
08: Nat Horyzontem - Lightsphere
09: Breeze - Perfect Stranger

Free Music Part 1 - Electro House

I got a couple of electro house cuts in my inbox today that I wanted to post up. The first track came from DJ Ryley. It's a re-edit of John Dahlback - Pyramid (Dirty South remix) with an added acapella on top to pump up the track. This is a really big tune, ready for prime time club action:

John Dahlback - Pyramid (Dirty South remix - DJ Ryley Full Bootleg)

Visit DJ Ryley on MySpace.

This next track is from Mike McGuinness. Mike is a DJ / Producer from the UK. His track is called 'Disco Biscuits' and fits in the electro house vein as well. Though not as banging as a lot of electro house, this track is a slow building groover, with some nice layering. The beat is a good steady beat and this track would also work well with sets of tech house, tribal and progressive house.

Mike McGuinness - Disco Biscuit

This last track I have been sitting on and I don't know why. Another dope remix from my friend and local Portland producer / remixer Jon Cates. This one is his remix of Claude VonStroke's 'Deep Throat' track:

Madonna Remixed!

Be sure to visit The Remix Kid is a producer / remixer from New York. He took on the daunting task of remixing not one, but nine classic Madonna tracks. With all the over-the-top electro garbage that is being produced right now, it's nice to find some quality production such as theirs. Heavily influenced by the likes of Daft Punk, Boys Noize and MSTRKRFT, they make electro that is fun on the dancefloor.

They are kind enough to share their music with their fans, so we would like you to hear some of their remixes and production work. Enjoy the music!

Some of these I have been sitting on for far too long, so I have to share them with you. A nice variety here, so I will do a little blurb about each track. Don't forget you can also stream before you download.

Enjoy the music!

Radiohead - Creep (Copycat Club remix) :: Copycat on the remix of Radiohead's first big tune. A little slow, but it does a great job of working with the original vocal. Almost on the industrial edge, but has some acid sounds in it as well.

Meet Division Kent

Division Kent is an electronica duo from Zurich - Andrea B. & Sky Antinori. They have released their second album - 'Gravity' featuring 11 songs.

The new album is named after a track that turned into what it is by a series of coincidences and accidents: a beat flying into a frenzy; a voice that dives abruptly one night; two song sketches coming together.

"GRAVITY is dark with colour“, is how Andrea B. describes the 11 songs. A fictional trip through a real setting, cinematic moods and the stardust of pop culture. Moments before they blur from the urge to be everywhere and nowhere – sometimes “upbeat”, sometimes “zen”, but always completely lucid.

Whereas the first album largely emerged in musical togetherness at the corner of Division Avenue/Kent Avenue in industrialised Brooklyn – DIVISION KENT sought the collaboration of soul mates this time round.

Peter Scherer, musician, composer and producer, who co-shaped the New York music scene during the past 25 years, produced two of the songs. During the course of his career, he regularly surpassed genre borders and cooperated with experimental artists such as Laurie Anderson, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Amedeo Pace/Blonde Redhead, David Byrne/Talking Heads. He introduced DIVISION KENT to Peter Schmidt (Beatsteaks, Klee) in Berlin, in whose Ballsaal-Studio a major portion of the album was mixed. Peter Schmidt mediated a contact to his companion Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Interpol, Indochine, Nick Cave) – a pioneer since the beginning of the 80s when it comes to the amalgamation of electronic music with guitar sounds as well as balancing the atmosphere, noise and beauty of a melody.

We're excited to offer you a couple of remixes of original tracks from the 'Gravity' album, which give you a little more of an uptempo taste of the music, while maintaining many of the original song elements.

Division Kent - Offshore (The Phantom's Revenge remix) :: a super discofied remix!

Division Kent - L'Heure Bleue (Keenhouse Remix) :: This remix also has a disco-house flavor, with LA producer Keenhouse on the remix duty.

Label Spotlight :: SubSensory Recordings

In the past year, Portland, Oregon, based SubSensory Recordings has becoming a driving force behind the area's Techno scene with both it's DJ roster and digital record label. Its' current roster of artists includes Portland Techno legend George Holland, label founder JAK as well as Lil Roj, Primal, Cozmix Vixen, AO and Nathan Detroit. JAK talks a little bit about the labels history and its' future plans:

"When I started SubSensory in 2005 my goal was to develop the framework for a record label and to push the Techno sound in Portland, which had fallen off considerably since the middle and late 90s. During the first two years things moved slowly, so I focused my energy in the studio and started the SubSensory website to help promote my mixes and tunes. I also began a guerilla marketing campaign using MySpace and many national and international EDM forums.

In 2007 this strategy began to pay off both in terms of visits to the SubSensory site and gigs. We started getting thousands of hits a month, my mixes were getting downloaded at surprising rates, and I began playing almost every weekend. I was booked in Seattle for the first time in years and also signed several original tracks on Portland based Akashik Records. I also started collaborating with Portland based hard-techno artist Primal, who had already released his own tracks on a number of international labels, and Louisiana transplant Dj Lil Roj. Roj, Markus (Primal) and I spent many Friday nights at the SubSensory studio mixing beats with beers and sharing ideas regarding the techno sound and its future.

In summer of 2007 Jak learned he and and his wife had the opportunity to work and live in Chile for 12 months. They didn't waste any time in accepting the offer and in July 07 they found themselves living in Vina Del Mar a resort city and popular tourist destination on Chile's central coast.

Moving to Chile gave me a new perspective, more time to spend on the label and time to reflect on the scene in general. I quickly saw that Chilean artists faced barriers similar to those faced by Portlanders. Specifically clubs who were resistant to techno, low pay for Djs, isolation from the international dj circuit, and a lack of cooperation between local artists. With a little luck I hooked up with some good people and had the opportunity to play many of the areas top clubs and parties and to collaborate with several local producers. I also took my first serious look at the digital music market, which I had previously shunned. Something I came to terms with in Chile was that although I prefer vinyl, many aspiring international DJs don't have the access to vinyl that we enjoy in the US. For example a new vinyl record in Chile costs 18 to 20 US dollars, in a country where most people earn a relatively small salary. This spawned the idea of distributing our first releases in the digital format." In the Fall of 2007 SubSensory's first two EP's, "Shrapnel" and "Circles" hit the digital market with JunoDownload, TrackItDown, BeatsDigital and DanceRecords.com.

Since then SubSensory has released 5 EP's featuring tracks from Jak, Primal, and Chilean artist Basstik and coming EPs will feature tracks and Remixes from Lil Roj, Chilean artist Mikiphone, Seattle based Jakub, and others TBA. SubSensory has also assembled Portland's strongest techno DJ roster including JAK and Lil Roj and George Holland. George came out of a 5 year hiatus in 2007 and has quickly re-established himself as one of the most in-demand local djs. Others include Dj *aO*, Vixen, and PRA's Nathan Detroit (www.pra.org), all of whom have seen a sizable surge in popularity in the past 6 months. In July 2008 JAK returns to Portland on the heels of the labels growth and his calendar is quickly filling up with event bookings including a highly anticipated Thursday August 14th event at Holocene, which will feature tag team sets from the entire Portland SubSensory roster."

JAK - Dirty Girl

JAK - Tension Control

JAK - Live in Santiago, Chile :: "Live in Santiago" was recorded live 6-22-2008 at club Piso 33, one of the hottest electronic clubs in Santiago Chile. A South American flavored dj set featuring a broad range of techno, tribal, electro-house, some latin flavored tech and even a bit of progressive.

DJ Lil Roj - Absorption :: Recorded in November 2007, Lil Roj's demo "Absorption" features artists such as Martin Eyerer, Dubfire, Wink, Cirez D, Chris liebing. This mix showcases a fine selection of techno and minimal mixed and blended to perfection, a perfect example of Roj's intelligent take on dirty-techy funk.
